Joseph R Tacchino
Joseph R. Tacchino, a resident of New City for 47 years, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday May 6, 2008 at the home of his daughter, Kathy and his son-in-law William Jankun in West Nyack. He was 83.

Born in Hudson County, NJ, he moved from Teaneck, NJ in 1963. He was predeceased in 2007 by his beloved wife, Betty (Elizabeth Beam Tacchino), to whom he was married for 61 years. He is survived by his son Gregg of Nanuet, his daughter, Kathy and her husband Bill, his son, Kenn and his wife Patricia of Broomall, PA and by his grandchildren, Joseph Tacchino and his wife Melissa of Fishkill and Peggy, Arthur, Julie and Kevin Tacchino and Kim Johnson of Pennsylvania and by his great grandson, Nathan. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert.

In 1948 he was appointed as Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics for Congers High School, that later became Clarkstown Central School District. He retained these positions until his retirement in 1984. He was also a teacher and coach. As Athletic Director of the school district, he was responsible for the expansion of the athletic program that started as seven teams in Congers and grew to 16 sports, 73 boys and girls teams and included 115 coaches and hundreds of student athletes each year, at the Districts two high schools and three junior highs. As a soccer coach for 14 years, he won 10 Rockland County and 5 Sectional Championships. He also held many positions on county, section, and NY State athletic executive committees.

He had previously joined the Navy in 1942 as a Midshipman in the V-12 Program and received a commission as an Ensign in 1945. He served in the Asiatic Theatre in World War II, retiring as a Lieutenant, JG in 1946. After the war he returned to college earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and a Master of Arts in Physical Education from New York University.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 pm and Friday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 pm at the “Family Owned” Joseph W. Sorce F.H. Inc.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in St. Paul's Catholic Church, 82 Lake Rd. West, Congers.

Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ.
